Typical soul food items

Soul food is the cuisine of Black Americans, although it is eaten throughout much of the South. The cuisine is a blend of cuisines from other cultures as well, and borrows heavily from Native Indian cuisine, especially in terms of its usage of cornmeal. There are many common items in soul food recipes that you may easily recall as having eaten at least once in your life. Let’s look at some of them.

Soul food makes full use of meat and organ meats; items like pigs feet, intestines, poultry giblet, and fatback are commonly prepared as dishes. There is a lot of deep frying and baking for meats, often with added special sauces that can enhance the flavor a great deal.

As for vegetables, okra, various beans, grains, and peas are often cooked. Black eyed peas are frequently prepared as dishes. In soul food, rice is eaten a lot more than wheat. Potatoes, either fried or boiled, are also a favorite choice. And of course, corn or maize is probably the most heavily cooked item.
