Using Diet to Control Diabetes

| Author: | Posted in Diabetes, Nutrition

Many patients choose to control diabetes type 2 with diet and exercise instead of taking medication. The diabetes diet contains all kinds of nutritious foods that can be enjoyed in moderation. Regularly scheduled mealtimes is a big part of the diabetic meal plan.

Instead of viewing the diet as restrictive, search for new and interesting ways to enjoy fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, lean meats, and heart healthy fats. Avoid items that contain large amounts of sugar and starch because these will have a negative impact on your blood glucose levels.

Limit your cholesterol intake to about 200 mg per day. Egg yolks, shellfish, organ meat, and high-fat dairy products all contain cholesterol. You should also try to limit sodium to 2,000 mg per day.

If you tire of drinking plain water, freshen it up by adding lemon, lime, or cucumber slices.

You can also choose a sugar free drink instead. Many companies now manufacture sugar free alternatives that are safe to consume on your diabetic diet. Low fat and fat free milk are also great options.
